Types of rainwater harvesting systems we install

If you’ve conducted any research you’ll appreciate there are hundreds of water harvesting solutions on the market. Most notably, these usually all fit into 3 specific types. Most systems will require a water storage tank, plumbing, filter and pump.

Garden rainwater harvesting systems

This is what we would call entry level harvesting and is suitable for irrigating the garden or washing the car. As the name implies it is only suitable for domestic purposes.

Indirect rainwater harvesting systems

Indirect or gravitational rainwater harvesting utilises a header tank which can supply your home or business with water. Typically the water is then used on appliances, garden taps, watering plants, cleaning, toilets and so on.

It is suitable for domestic purposes and can be scaled up for larger commercial applications. Typically, you will also need a pump of some sort to aid the flow.

Direct rainwater harvesting systems

For home use, a direct rainwater harvesting installation is the most popular. The storage tank can be located above ground or below ground and is pumped into the building to your appliances. This kind of system can also be replenished by main water once empty.

Frequently asked questions

Typically, we will consult with you over the type of installation that’s best suited to your needs. For example, if you are completely off-grid you will need to plumb the harvested water into the home. Alternatively, if you’re a business looking to save on water costs you may need a much larger system that pumps the water around your commercial building.

Unfortunately no. There are regulations governing the drinking of harvested rainwater. As a result we wouldn’t recommend doing so. You can however invest further in a water purification system that would indeed make your rainwater drinkable.

For the most part all rooftops are suitable for harvesting rainwater. Bearing in mind the collected water is not suitable for drinking or ingesting in any way. Obviously, a flat roof will be less efficient in channelling the rainwater into your storage tank.

Generally, once your system in installed it will need little maintenance. We would recommend a year check-up to ensure everything is working as it should, the filters are clear and that there is no damage or blockages.

For a domestic rainwater harvesting installation you will generally not require planning permission. If you require a large scale commercial solution that disrupts the landscape with multiple tanks you may run into problems with the Government.
